
NORFOLK | Former National Football League, Virginia Tech and Booker T. Washington High School Football star Bruce Smith will take part in the Norfolk Youth Community Football championships today at Lake Taylor High School.
Smith, the NFL career sacks leader, is expected to hand out championship trophies and toss the opening coin for two of the three games.
At 9 a.m., the Shoop Park Cowboys meet the Oakmont Corrupters for the Pee Wee championship. The Titustown Comets meet the Oakmont Corrupters at 10:30 in the Midget championship game.
The Berkley Cougars meet the Shoop Park Cowboys at noon for the Bantam championship.
Admission to the games is free. Lake Taylor is located at 1384 Kempsville Road.

city seeks ideas for northside skate park
The city will host a skate park design charette from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Northside Middle School
The goal is to gather ideas about what elements people would like included in a public skate park planned for Northside Park. A second meeting will be held Jan. 24 to present design options.
The park is tentatively scheduled to open in the summer of 2010.

sunday closing set for midtown tunnel
The Midtown Tunnel will close for one hour Sunday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The closing will be from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. while crews test the tide gates, VDOT said.

some road projects set to take a holiday
The city will halt some road construction projects on Black Friday and Thanksgiving weekend to allow better downtown traffic flow.
Projects on these streets will stop on Friday, a city news release said:
\n\St. Paul's Boulevard
\n\ Brambleton Avenue between Duke Street and Interstate 264
n\ Virginia Beach Boulevard between Llewellyn and Monticello avenues
Three closings will remain in effect: One lane of Brambleton from Colley Avenue to Duke Street, the closing of Charlotte Street, and the southbound lane closing of Brambleton from Colley to Yarmouth Street.

ywca panel will examine '08 election
The YWCA South Hampton Roads will host a panel discussion on the presidential election at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4.
"Not a Blue State, Not a Red State, But United States: A Post Election Conversation on Race, Gender & Politics" will be held at 5215 Colley Ave.
