Bringing the Bowl home Staubach, Moose build momentum for 2011 event

Bringing the Bowl home Staubach, Moose build momentum for 2011 event
They have seven Super Bowl appearances and five Super Bowl rings between them, but now former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and fullback Daryl "Moose" Johnston are playing for a different team. Staubach is the chairman of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee, and Johnston is helping head up the Legends Action Committee. Both are using their shared experiences to help North Texas prepare for the sport's biggest game in 2011.

Q: How exciting is it to be such a big part of the first Super Bowl in North Texas?

Staubach: What's really exciting is the people that are committed and involved. Everybody wants to pitch in in some way. We're trying to take this year to really prepare for next year. ... It's not only going to be a Super Bowl week, it's going to be a year of activities leading up to the Super Bowl.

Johnston: It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. That point is being made in all the meetings and everything we're doing as a committee, as we start to let people know what's going on. We've got a chance to do such a good job that the NFL wants to come back, and that's the main goal that everybody has set.

Q: You are billing this as a regionwide event, which is different than the traditional Super Bowl host city. What kind of challenges has that presented?

Staubach: The NFL does everything they can to cooperate with us, but they also make the decisions on the NFL Experience, the media headquarters, things like that. But they know how important this is to us. They have designated Fort Worth as the host city for the AFC champions, and Dallas is the host city for the NFC champions, and, of course, Arlington gets the game. We want to keep that balance the best we can. ... The NFL calls the shots on a number of things, but we also have an influence on a lot of the concerts and the other activities.

Johnston: I think there's been opportunities for other cities to do it the way the North Texas region is doing it, but they chose not to. And that's one of the great things that this committee has done, is recognize this as an opportunity - not just for Dallas or Fort Worth or Arlington - but to be inclusive and allow all the cities in North Texas to have some part in this event. And that's what this Legends Action Committee is designed to do.

Q: What do you want the Super Bowl XLV experience to be like?

Staubach: I just want to do a good Super Bowl for North Texas and the NFL. The NFL is part of my life, and it's influenced everything. It's had an effect on my family, my personal life, and I thought this would be a good way to give back to North Texas and the NFL, by putting on a great Super Bowl.

Johnston: I envision an event in which we have more people come to North Texas for the game than has ever happened before. ... Then, when they get here, they'll have so much fun they'll want to come back. And the NFL will want to come back, too.

Q: Have you thought about what it would be like to be a player on that 2010 Cowboys team, knowing that you have a chance to play in the Super Bowl in your home stadium? Would it be positive or pressure?

Staubach: It would be phenomenal. It's never happened before, where a local team has played the Super Bowl in their home stadium. They're in the mix of teams that could be in the Super Bowl in two years.

Johnston: I think it would be amazing. There is a real possibility that the Cowboys could be the NFC representative in that Super Bowl. I can't imagine the pressure ... but what a cool opportunity.

Q: What is your favorite Super Bowl memory?

Staubach: Tom Landry on the shoulders of Walt Garrison and a bunch of other guys, smiling like crazy when we beat the Dolphins in Super Bowl VI.

Johnston: 1992 at the Rose Bowl. The Jets going over our heads. We're there, we're looking across and it's the Buffalo Bills. It's their third Super Bowl in a row, and we're young and nervous, and the Jets go over the top of us, and the hair stood up on my arms. It was unbelievable.

Moose on the state of the Cowboys

I think they need to get their confidence back. It was a very talented team last year, but there were a lot of little things that happened over the course of the year. Marion Barber was hurt late in the year, Jason Witten was hurt late in the year, they lost Felix Jones. In my opinion, their biggest challenge next year is putting Philadelphia behind them. That was an embarrassing, embarrassing way to lose a game.
