Cowboys have plenty of trade bait for draft
With 11 picks and no gaping holes to fill, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has ample resources to bolster his reputation as the NFL draft's preeminent wheeler-dealer.

"When Jerry Jones calls on draft day, he's like E.F. Hutton," said Ron Wolf, former general manager of the Green Bay Packers. "When he talks, you listen."

That was certainly the case last year, when Jones made six trades during draft weekend. He warmed up with a pre-draft deal that sent tight end Anthony Fasano and linebacker Akin Ayodele to Miami for a pick that sparked a couple of other swaps that eventually led to the selection of Georgia Tech running back Tashard Choice in the fourth round.

Only NFC East rival Philadelphia has as many picks as the Cowboys. Dallas has compensatory fifth- and sixth-round picks that can't be dealt.

Bottom line: Jones is ready to burn up the phone lines again when the first two rounds are held Saturday.

"You can look pretty crafty if you've got a lot of picks," the Dallas Morning News quoted Jones as saying last April.

One option is a trade to move up into the first round. As it stands now, the Cowboys have only one pick on the first day, a second-rounder (No. 51 overall).

Another option would be to bundle a few picks and trade for a veteran or two who could contribute right away.

With so many picks, the possibilities seem endless.

"Jerry is a very smart man," Wolf said. "When he proposes a deal, you've got to listen."

The Cowboys have depth needs at offensive line, wide receiver, quarterback, defensive tackle, inside linebacker and safety. With that in mind, they entertained nearly 30 draft prospects last week.

Over the past three years, the team's top picks - Felix Jones (2008), Anthony Spencer (2007) and Bobby Carpenter (2006) - all visited Valley Ranch.

Most mock drafts have Dallas taking a safety with its first pick. Among the safeties who visited the Cowboys were Western Michigan's Louis Delmas, Clemson's Michael Hamlin and Texas Tech's Darcel McBath.

Houston tackle Sebastian Vollmer was among the offensive linemen who traveled to Valley Ranch. The receivers invited to Irving include Ohio State's Brian Robiskie, Georgia's Mohamed Massaquoi and North Carolina's Brandon Tate.

Quarterbacks who stopped by include Texas A&M's Stephen McGee and San Jose State's Tom Brandstater.

Among the inside linebackers the team is said to be eyeing are LSU's Darry Beckwith and Richmond's Lawrence Sidbury.

Other players who Jones may be intrigued with include West Virginia quarterback Pat White and Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias.
