Cowboys opt to swap out of second round
IRVING - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' reputation as a draft-weekend wheeler-dealer remains intact.

Unhappy with the talent available at No. 51 overall and viewing later rounds as a chance to find much-needed special-teams performers, the Cowboys sent their lone pick Saturday to Buffalo for the 11th selection in the third round and the 10th choice in the fourth.

The transaction gives the Cowboys a whopping 12 picks today in rounds three through seven, including two in the third and three in the fourth. The picks acquired from the Bills are No. 75 and No. 110 overall.

It marked the first time since 1980 that the Cowboys did not make a pick in the first two rounds.

Last season, Jones made six draft-weekend deals. With this latest trade, he's in position for even more swapping today.

quot;We will get a lot of offers,quot; Jones said. quot;That's starting in here right now. There are a lot of calls coming in. ... Tomorrow morning is when somebody will have somebody they just got to have.quot;

Speculation that Dallas would deal down raged after Seattle took Oregon center Max Unger at No. 49 and Cleveland selected Georgia wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi at No. 50.

The Cowboys had shown an interest in both players.

quot;There were five or six players we might have taken had we stayed (at No. 51),quot; Jones said.

Prospects selected early in the second round that Dallas scouted included safety Louis Delmas (Detroit), safety Patrick Chung (New England), wide receiver Brian Robiskie (Cleveland) and wide receiver Pat White (Miami).

With all those players gone, Dallas got on the phone to Buffalo and finalized a deal. The Bills then took Oregon State guard Andrew Levitre.

Jones said he never seriously considered trading up into the first or into the early second round because those deals would have required giving up some of next year's picks.

quot;We weren't willing to give up enough to move up,quot; Jones said.

Another factor in the trade down was Jones' belief he can find players in the third and fourth rounds who can contribute immediately on special teams.

quot;We had some head-scratchers up there (in the second round) because they were lacking the ability to play special teams,quot; Jones said. quot;In these third and fourth rounds, we will try to get them on the field on special teams.quot;

Having found such current stalwarts as Jason Witten, Marion Barber and Jay Ratliff recently on the second day of the draft, the Cowboys also know the picks they acquired from the Bills could produce some starters.

quot;We will have players we draft (Sunday) who will have a chance to be on the field (next season),quot; Jones said.

Jones said there was one player - Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy - available at No. 51 who the Cowboys had rated as a first-rounder. But Jones said McCoy, who ended up going to Philadelphia with the 21st pick in the second round, had the same skills set as Felix Jones.
