Dallas Cowboys Inside Slant 2009-02-13

Dallas Cowboys Inside Slant 2009-02-13
It's official: The Cowboys need to make a run at Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

The team needs a leader and there is no better leader in the NFL than Lewis.

Forget all the talk about the Cowboys considering letting Terrell Owens go to help solve some locker room chemistry issues.

The Cowboys need T.O.

He is not going anywhere.

But if they want to improve the locker room where Owens' dominant personality goes unchecked and unchallenged on a daily basis, then they need to sign Lewis.

Too many Cowboys players are too laid back and non-confrontational to take control of the locker room.

This should be quarterback Tony Romo's team.

But he is more interested in Jessica Simpson and the journey than being a true leader.

Ray Lewis won't cower from the moment.

The Cowboys are warming up to the idea of making a run a Lewis.

Even Owens is on board with the idea.

And we already know the Cowboys are on Lewis' short list of teams he would consider in free agency along with the Jets and Ravens.

"I don't see all of that outside stuff that they're talking about what goes on in Dallas," Lewis told the NFL Network at the Pro Bowl last week. "I see Dallas as a great opportunity. It's always been America's Team. It's just a great place to play football."

The key for the Cowboys is trying to find a way to make it work financially.

Lewis has said he doesn't play less so he has no intentions of taking less money.

The Ravens will not put the franchise tag on Lewis, but they say they are willing to pay a lot to keep him.

Making it little tricky for the Cowboys is their plans to prioritize re-signing linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a long term contract extension.

Still, the Cowboys have made salary cap magic happen before.

They need to do it again.

As of now, Lewis might be the only man who can save the Cowboys from imploding.
