The Cowboys have pretty much closed up shop on free agency until after the draft.
They did not make a splash, but they did have several solid pickups.
The Cowboys signed four players and acquired one in a trade. Linebackers Matt Stewart and Keith Brooking, defensive end Igor Olshansky and safety Gerald Sensabaugh were signed, and quarterback Jon Kitna was acquired in a trade with Detroit for cornerback Anthony Henry.
The Cowboys got the backup quarterback they wanted, and they acquired starters at defensive end, inside linebacker and safety, replacing the departed Chris Canty, Zach Thomas and Roy Williams, respectively.
The latter two moves were upgrades, while Olshansky for Canty is a push.
The Cowboys did take a step back at receiver with the loss of Terrell Owens.
But they addressed that position last season with the trade for Roy Williams to be the team's go-to receiver of the future.
Well, the future is now.
While the Cowboys have some questions, as most teams do, they don't have any glaring holes, which will allow them to go into the draft free to select the best available player.
This is not to say that the Cowboys don't have positions of interest. Receiver, safety, cornerback and offensive line are areas they will focus on for their first pick in the draft.
And following the draft they will get back to the second phase of free agency.
Look for them to target a veteran cornerback. Samari Rolle, Ken Lucas, Dre Bly and R. J. McQuarters are among the veteran cornerbacks available.
It's a position of need because the Cowboys only have five cornerbacks on their roster following the departure of Henry. And they only have one with starting experience in Terence Newman.
The Cowboys are going to let 2008 rookies Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick compete for Henry's old spot at right cornerback.
And while they like their potential, the Cowboys still need a veteran option at the position in case neither can handle the job.
