--WR Roy Williams is tearing it up on the practice field with quarterback Tony Romo according to owner Jerry Jones.
Jones is pleased that Williams took it upon himself to show up a month before the start of the offseason program to develop chemistry with Romo.
"First of all, he's the first one here," Jones said. "And, secondly, he's lighting them up. He doesn't have any nicks. He's out there working with (receivers coach) Ray Sherman and those guys are elated, I'm not exaggerating, they are elated at the work he is getting in and what he is doing and his focus and his work habits and everything that he is doing. He had to make it happen, and he did it, and that's impressed everybody."
Jones blames injuries and the team's now regrettable decision to not make Williams a focal point of the offense last season. Williams caught just 19 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown in 10 games with the Cowboys.
Jones remains steadfast in his belief in Williams and is even more confident after seeing his work in the offseason with quarterback Tony Romo that he describes as "triple A-plusses."
"The verdict is really still out, but I would absolutely do that trade again," Jones said. "I would do that trade again. The only fair way to look at that trade, at his age, is to give it the benefit of how and what it does as we go ahead over the next year or two."
Jones has seen Williams up close and personal this offseason and said the future looks very bright.
--WRs Sam Hurd and Miles Austin signed their one-year restricted free agent tenders of $1.54 million. Austin tried to work his way into a multi-year contract extension but ended up settling for the tender and hoping to cash in big as a free agent next season.
--LB Greg Ellis might start worrying about his job security. The Cowboys drafted two outside linebackers in Victor Butler and Brandon Williams. If they show promise in camp, Ellis could be the one to be cut.
Ellis, 34, is entering the final season of his contract. The Cowboys could save $4.15 million by cutting him.
"That is something that goes on every year," owner Jerry Jones said of Ellis' possible concerns. "It just goes on every year, no matter what you're talking about."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Actually, that dynamic is just the game. That's part of every day. That's part of breathing. I know he had that same concern when Spencer came in. He had that same concern when he moved over (from defensive end to outside linebacker). And that's rightfully so. I think the world of Greg, but anything we do there one way or the other, I don't want him to read about it. I want to sit down and talk to him about it." -- Owner Jerry Jones on OLB Greg Ellis' potential concern about his job status given the team added multiple players at his position in the draft.
