COLLEGE STATION - Different paths have led Texas A&M's Bennett brothers to two traditional Thanksgiving games - on two levels.
Younger brother Martellus is playing in the NFL. Older sibling Mike is still playing collegiately.
"Everybody's story is different," said Martellus, a Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end. "For Mike to stay in school and finish his senior season was big for him."
The Cowboys play host to the Seattle Seahawks at 3:15 p.m. today, while the Aggies visit rival Texas at 7 tonight.
"My parents need to borrow a jet or something," Mike said, smiling.
The Bennett parents plan to be in Austin with Mike, a senior defensive end.
"I told them to make sure and go to Mike's game because it's his last collegiate game," Martellus said.
From Alief to Aggieland
The brothers attended Alief Taylor High. Four years ago, then-A&M coach Dennis Franchione signed Mike to a scholarship, and he began working out with the team in December 2004. He had originally signed with Louisiana Tech but didn't start school.
Two months later, the Aggies inked Martellus, who was rated as the nation's top high school tight end and already had earned a reputation as a showman. Nothing's changed. Last Sunday, Martellus guaranteed an A&M victory over the heavily favored Longhorns - even though he's now in the NFL. "We expect to beat Texas - the yellow-bellies," said Martellus.
UT coach Mack Brown took Martellus' rabble-rousing in stride.
"We do know that Martellus has comments," Brown said. "It would have surprised me if Martellus didn't have comments this week."
About a year ago, Martellus was tight-lipped - perhaps for the first time in his career - about his intentions following his junior season. At the same time Mike, the quieter one, sat out the Alamo Bowl because he was academically ineligible. Few expected Mike, 23, back for his senior season. But instead of turning pro like his brother, Mike regained his eligibility.
Not going as planned
He's not always sure it's been worth it; Texas A&M is 4-7 and won't play in a bowl in coach Mike Sherman's first eason. But despite sitting out one game for breaking team rules, Mike leads the Aggies with 11 tackles for losses.
"He'll do anything it takes to win," A&M linebacker Matt Featherston said. "Off the field, I know he's had his issues, but who doesn't?"
Meanwhile, Martellus, 21, has come on strong for Dallas of late, with two touchdown catches over the last couple of weeks. The only problem?
"He needs to work on his celebration dance," Mike said.
