IRVING - Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee entered the draft thinking there was a good chance he'd go in the second round.
When that didn't happen, he left his house in frustration.
Then his cell phone rang.
"It was Mr. (Jerry) Jones. Immediately my mindset went from frustration to joy," said McGee, a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan.
Seeking to strengthen their specials teams, improve depth and revamp the bottom of their roster, the Cowboys drafted 12 players in rounds three through seven Sunday, including McGee with the first pick in the fourth.
"He has mobility, good judgment, prototype size and is physical," Jones said. "I saw serious mobility that had (Tony Romo-like) aspects."
The Cowboys selected two other players from Texas schools: Texas Tech defensive end Brandon Williams in the fourth and TCU linebacker/safety Stephen Hodge in the sixth.
After not making a pick on the first day because of trades past and present, the Cowboys took Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams and versatile Ball State offensive lineman Robert Brewster in the third.
Jason Williams, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds recently, is expected to make an immediate impact on special teams and in sub packages.
"He can really run, and he will hit you," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips.
Phillips also has high hopes for Brandon Williams and another defensive end taken in the fourth, Oregon State's Victor Butler. Both led their conferences in sacks last season.
"Usually guys that get a lot of sacks in college are productive at the next level," Phillips said.
