The Cowboys have spoken with former NFL coach Dan Reeves about a possible consultant position within the organization, multiple sources said.
No final decision has been made and an announcement, if any, would only occur after the Super Bowl.
Reeves played (1965-1972) and was an assistant coach (mid-late 1970s) with the Cowboys under the late Tom Landry.
But Reeves made his mark as a head coach with the Giants, Broncos and Falcons and reached four Super Bowls. He lost all four, but he compiled a career record of 192-166-2.
In an interview with Sirius Satellite Radio last month, Reeves said he was interested in getting back into coaching and had hired an agent.
"I want to see what's out there," Reeves said.
Later in the interview, Reeves said, "But, you know, it's in your blood [and] I can't get it out."
Reeves did not return numerous phone calls seeking comment.
Cowboys officials also declined to comment.
Earlier this month, in another interview with KTTB-AM in Tyler, Reeves said he could work with the Cowboys if asked.
"They had an awful lot of distractions - things that you don't need to have with a Football team, the T.O.'s, the Pacman Jones instances," he said. "You say, well, that doesn't really bother us. But it really does, because that's the focus. "
It's the second consecutive year the Cowboys have tried to hire a consultant. Last year, they tried to hire Dom Capers to work with the defense, but after then-defensive coordinator Brian Stewart expressed concern about it, Capers went to work with New England.
Coach Wade Phillips has a close relationship with Reeves. Phillips replaced Reeves in Atlanta with three games remaining in the 2003 season, and he took over the Denver job in 1993 when Reeves was fired.
When the 2008 season ended, Phillips noted he needed to make some changes and said he would speak to people he respects in the coaching profession such as Marv Levy, Marty Schottenheimer and Reeves.
Bennett takes video down: Tight end Martellus Bennett's profanity-laced YouTube video was taken down Tuesday.
Cowboys officials had no comment, but NFL officials said the team was looking into the video that had Bennett wearing a Cowboys helmet and using a derogatory term to describe African-Americans and gays.
Bennett did not return a call seeking comment.
