Dec. 1 deadline for Cubs bids NEW YORK - Bidders for the Chicago Cubs have until Dec. 1 to submit offers, Major League Baseball said Wednesday after a meeting of its ownership committee. Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, said representatives of four bidders have met in New York in recent weeks with officials from the commissioner's office, MLB's Internet company and the sport's new television network.

The team was put up for sale in April 2007 when Tribune Co., the Cubs' owner, announced it was being acquired by real estate developer Sam Zell. DuPuy said the latest deadline was set by the Tribune Co. "Bids are expected the week after Thanksgiving," DuPuy said. "Mr. Zell claims the team is for sale and they're moving forward." Cubs select 3 pitchers CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs have selected the contracts of right-handed minor league pitchers Mitch Atkins, Justin Berg and Marcos Mateo and added them to their 40-man roster. More offers for CC MILWAUKEE - An agent familiar with the situation said Wednesday he expected the San Francisco Giants to make an offer to free agent left-hander CC Sabathia's agents in an effort to coax him into playing for what in essence is his hometown team. Another agent keeping tabs on Sabathia said he expected the Los Angeles Angels also to enter the fray at some point. Seattle hires Wakamatsu SEATTLE - Don Wakamatsu became the first Asian-American manager in major league baseball history when he was hired Wednesday by the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners' 14th manager, Wakamatsu was bench coach for the Oakland Athletics last season. Before that he spent five years with the Texas Rangers. Iowa hoarding trophies Iowa hasn't won a bowl game since the 2005 Capital One Bowl, but it's currently in possession of all three of the traveling trophies it plays for - the Heartland and Cy-Hawk trophies and the Floyd of Rosedale statute. The Hawkeyes took back the Heartland with a 38-16 win over Wisconsin on Oct. 18, and it wrestled the Cy-Hawk away from Iowa State with a 17-5 victory on Sept. 13. Iowa has had Floyd - a bronze pig that's 21 inches long, 15 inches tall and weighs in at 98.3 pounds - since last November, when it beat Minnesota, 21-16. Saturday will be the 74th time these teams have played for the right to hold onto the pig for 12 months. Ball St. survives scare MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Nate Davis threw four touchdown passes, and No. 14 Ball State survived a scare from Central Michigan on Wednesday night in a 31-24 victory that gave the Cardinals a school-record for wins in a season. Vikes' Allen fined 25K EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has been fined $25,000 for a recent spate of late hits, but he won't be suspended. Allen was fined $50,000 for two late hits earlier this month on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub, one that injured his knee. The following week against Green Bay, Allen was called for roughing the passer after knocking down Aaron Rodgers. He was also fined $5,000 for a late hit in a game at Chicago in October. Pacman reinstated ARLINGTON, Texas - The NFL is giving Adam "Pacman" Jones another chance. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday the suspended cornerback has been reinstated by league commissioner Roger Goodell, but he must miss two more games - this Sunday and the following game on Thanksgiving. He'll be back Dec. 7 at Pittsburgh. Khabibulin stops 36 GLENDALE, Ariz. - Nikolai Khabibulin made 36 saves through overtime, then stopped two shots in the shootout as the Chicago Blackhawks edged the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-2, Tuesday night.
