EL PASO -- Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman of the Dallas Cowboys will be in El Paso on Tuesday to make a guest appearance on KROD-AM 600's "First and Goal" radio show, which is broadcast live from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the 3-Legged Monkey (1550 Hawkins).

The show is hosted weekly by Steve Kaplowitz and Cowboys defensive end Stephen Bowen at the 3-Legged Monkey. Another Cowboys special guest is scheduled to appear every other week..

Admission is free and door prizes will be given out.

Purdue hires Nord: Indiana television station WLFI-TV reported Monday that former UTEP head Football coach Gary Nord has been hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Purdue University.

Nord goes to Purdue from Florida Atlantic, where he has been an assistant coach since 2004. Nord was head coach at UTEP from 2000 to 2003 and compiled a 14-34 record over that span.

Moultrie honored: UTEP freshman forward Arnett Moultrie was chosen the co-Conference USA Rookie of the Week on Monday. Moultrie averaged 11.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.0 steals as UTEP faced four teams either ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes last week.?

HOF ballot set: Career steals leader Rickey Henderson heads 10 first-time candidates on this year's Hall of Fame ballot, joining holdovers Mark McGwire and Jim Rice -- eligible for the final time.

Other newcomers are Jay Bell, David Cone, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Jesse Orosco, Dan Plesac, Greg Vaughn, Mo Vaughn and Matt Williams.

Just 23 players are on the ballot, the smallest group ever. Holdovers include Harold Baines, Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson. Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Tim Raines, Lee Smith and Alan Trammell.

Comets to disband: The WNBA president says the franchise that won the league's first four championships is disbanding.

Donna Orender told Houston TV station KRIV that the league-owned Houston Comets would be shut down because new owners couldn't be found.

Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, the original owner of the Comets, sold the team to Houston businessman Hilton Koch last year. The WNBA took over the franchise earlier this year.

Harrell has surgery: Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell was recovering Monday after surgery to repair nine breaks in two fingers on his non-throwing hand. He won't miss any playing time.
