DETROIT -- North Carolina's players noticed a lot of green-clad Michigan State fans among the NCAA championship game record crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field on Monday night.
But they also found out how quiet the Detroit Lions often make the place after they rolled to leads as big as 24 points in the first half and swamped crowd-favorite Michigan State 89-72.
"We came out strong," North Carolina star Tyler Hansbrough said. "We wanted to get going from the gates. We knew there was going to be a big crowd there for them. We kind of wanted to take them out of it early."
Roy Williams became the 13th coach to win more than one NCAA title in his career. "Roy Williams is not that good," he said. "But boy, old Roy has got some big-time players, and that's what it takes." Williams won the title in 2005 with North Carolina. He lost the national title game in 2003 with Kansas.
NORTH CAROLINA'S 55 first-half points set a championship game record for points at halftime.
LAWSON SET a championship game record and tied an NCAA tournament record with eight steals in the game.
FORMER TAR HEEL Michael Jordan was introduced at halftime, along with the rest of the 2009 class of the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Jordan goes in with David Robinson, Dick Stockton, Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer.
NORTH CAROLINA won its fifth NCAA title, and second in five seasons. The Tar Heels are 5-4 all-time in NCAA title games, and have won the past four in which they have appeared.
THE TAR HEELS reached the championship game with five consecutive double-digit wins, and then won the final game by 17. The closest a team came to them in the tournament was 12 points.
